Nursing Homes in Romania. Exploring the Intersections of Commercialization and Institutional Dynamics

In October 2024, CareOrg team member Ionuț Földes participated in the SSR International Conference “Intersections. Structures and Flows. Exploring Multiplexity in Contemporary Sociology”, held in Bucharest, Romania. The conference focused on how multiple structural conditions and dynamic processes intersect in shaping contemporary social phenomena.

Within this framework, Ionuț Földes presented the paper “Nursing Homes in Romania. Exploring the Intersections of Commercialization and Institutional Dynamics”. The contribution examined how large-scale labour migration and the weakening of welfare state structures have reshaped senior care arrangements in Romania.

Focusing on institutional, legislative, and policy dimensions, the paper analysed the growing role of outsourcing and commercialization in eldercare and how these processes shift care responsibilities beyond the family sphere. Based on the analysis of official data, the study identified pronounced regional disparities in the distribution and accessibility of licensed care services, shaped by the interaction of regulatory frameworks, financing mechanisms, and commercial interests.

By bringing together migration, welfare transformation, and market dynamics, the presentation addressed the multiplex character of contemporary care systems and highlighted the structural conditions underpinning uneven access to eldercare in Romania.
