Panel Discussion: "Welcome to Allgäu?"—Global Migration and Local Needs in Care Work

On May 21, 2025, Dr. Ewa Palenga-Möllenbeck participated in the public panel discussion “Welcome to the Allgäu? Global Migration and Local Needs in Care Work”, hosted by the Faculty of Social Work and Health at Kempten University of Applied Sciences. The event explored the complex intersection of global migration trends and regional care labor demands.

Against the backdrop of over 122 million displaced people worldwide (UNHCR, 2024), the discussion addressed how global migration movements shape local labor markets, particularly in health and social care. Panelists examined the challenges and opportunities posed by recruiting care workers from abroad, including the consequences for countries of origin.

Following a keynote by Prof. Dr. Felicitas Hillmann (TU Berlin), Dr. Palenga-Möllenbeck (Goethe University)  joined other regional experts, including Matthias Fink (Kempten Hospital), Abdulrahman Alshalaby (Integration Council Kempten), and care professionals such as Racky Bousso and Erika Tempfli. The discussion was moderated by Katharina Simon and enriched by spoken word performances by artist Ivica Mijajlovic.

The event was part of the cultural program accompanying the traveling cartoon exhibition “A Place. Somewhere”, which visualizes global perspectives on displacement and migration. The exhibition and event series are supported by Diakonie Allgäu, Engagement Global, Kempten University, the city of Kempten, and the regional network "Wir im Allgäu."
