Petra Ezzeddine and Maroš Matiaško: "There is often an assumption that the family will be the caregivers".

"Just as money needs a national bank, the market alone will not regulate care, but rather deform it", says anthropologist Petra Ezzeddine, paraphrasing economist Karl Polanyi. This echoes the words of her colleague, human rights expert Maroš Matiašek, on the dysfunction of market logic in the context of care for the elderly. They are both part of the Czechoslovak team of CareOrg, a major international research project looking at how care work crosses borders, moving from Eastern and Central Europe to Western Europe. This includes the situation in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. On the photo: Amal Klimtová, Petra Ezzeddine, Maroš Matiaško. Photo credits: Ondřej Trojan.
